The software was developed to establish whether dyslexic users would benefit from using coloured backgrounds and overlays to help deal with scoptic sensitivity.  

Not everyone sees text as clearly defined images on a page.  Examples of difficulties experienced include:

• Text appearing very thin with grey around the letters.
• Text wobbling on the page so that it is difficult to focus clearly.
• Rivers of white flowing down through a block of text that distract the reader.
• Problems tracking what is being read.  Requiring the need to follow with a finger or use a ruler under the line being read.
• Getting to the end of a sentence and not knowing what it was about.
• Not recognising words because they have not been seen clearly when read before.

Opti-Colour does not claim to cure these conditions but it has been shown that the use of coloured backgrounds and overlays can make reading easier by reducing the effects of those difficulties.
